Debra graduated from New York University with a BA in Journalism and worked for trade magazines in the fields of tourism and fashion. For several years she was a copywriter for Avon products, writing promotional copy, advertising slogans and taglines for makeup, skincare, gift, jewelry, and children's products.
In 1989 Debra moved to the Bay Area and began her consulting career. She edited the monthly newsletter and supported the marketing efforts of an optical data storage company. She helped launch a trade magazine in the retail marketing field. At a marketing communications firm specializing in multimedia clients, she created press materials, arranged media placement and speaking engagements.
Debra has the distinction of having owned one of the very first Macintosh computers on the market. When she opened the monitor, she found the names of the original 40-or-so Apple employees etched on the back panel.
